Meet Mary & Matt
Mary and Matt met in Los Angeles, received their MBAs from UCLA, and graduated as a married couple ready to conquer new challenges. Inspired by Mary’s mother, who quietly revolutionized Korean cuisine, they founded K Fusion, a Korean fusion restaurant blending traditional Korean flavors with American fast-casual dining.
Mary has dedicated her career to uplifting communities, particularly through her work with non-profits in Los Angeles. An alumna of USC, she has honed her expertise in local leadership, driven by a deep-rooted passion for making a difference. Growing up in the vibrant restaurant industry, Mary watched her mother pioneer new food trends since the 80s, instilling in her a love for culinary innovation and community service. Her mother’s influence not only shaped her palate but also her understanding of how food can bring people together and drive cultural change.
Matt’s journey is a testament to resilience and versatility. A Marine Corps veteran, he transitioned into the corporate world with stints at JPMorgan and BCG. Armed with a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago, Matt's career began humbly washing dishes, a role that taught him the value of hard work and perseverance. His diverse life experiences, having lived in Seoul, Tokyo, D.C., Chicago, and Iraq, have given him a unique global perspective. Now, he proudly calls Los Angeles home, where he combines his strategic acumen with a passion for culinary innovation.
A Legacy of Innovation
K-Fusion has its roots in the inspiring life story of Mary’s mother, Kary. Kary's journey to the United States began in 1983 when she immigrated from South Korea with dreams of a brighter future. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country and language, she was determined to build a life for herself and her family.
In 1989, at the age of 28 and with limited English skills, Kary took a bold step and opened her first restaurant, the Japanese Teriyaki House. Her dedication and hard work paid off as the restaurant grew to multiple locations over the next decade. This success laid the foundation for her second major venture in 1998, a full-service Japanese sushi restaurant. For 15 years, Kary's sushi restaurant thrived, earning a loyal customer base and solidifying her reputation in the culinary world.

In 2016, Kary embarked on her most innovative project yet: a Korean fusion restaurant. Drawing from her previous experiences, she created a unique menu that blended Korean, Japanese, and American flavors. Her signature Korean BBQ dishes, along with comfort foods like burgers and tacos, quickly became fan favorites. One standout item on the menu was the Kalbi Burger, a creation inspired by Mary's childhood. When Mary wanted a burger, Kary used Korean BBQ sliced meat instead of a beef patty and added teriyaki sauce, creating a dish that still brings back fond memories for Mary. Encouraged by Mary, Kary included the teriyaki burger on the menu. This inspiration lead Kary to develop the Kalbi Burger, which became an instant hit.
Kary has always been at the forefront of emerging restaurant trends, and her Korean fusion concept has captivated diners with its bold flavors and innovative dishes. Her journey from a young immigrant with limited English to a successful restaurateur is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and passion for food.
